Which windshield replacement options should we go with to replace the one on a 22' Calligraphy? Please advise

Dear Palisader,

On our road trip back home, our windshield was hit by a little rock leading to a star-shaped crack, and recently we found that two hairline stress cracks started to appear (see pic below for details, we put a blue tape there to identify if there is any further crack). We'd like to get your feedback since this is the first time we ran into an issue like this.

1) Is it safe to keep driving as is and then replace the windshield in 2 months? Or, should we replace it ASAP? We'll be using the car for another month (adding about 1000-1500 miles) and then it'll be parked in the garage until late July.

2) We got a few quotes from local dealers and body shops.
  • Option A: Our Hyundai dealer gave us an estimate of $1995 for OEM glass and $400 for labor, i.e., a total of $2395.
  • Option B: Safelite gave us an estimate of $990 including calibration. We assume this will be an aftermarket product and based on previous posts, it seems that we should ask for polarized glass since we have HUD and other sensors.
  • Option C: A local auto glass shop gave us an estimate of $800 including calibration. We suppose if we were to go with aftermarket glass, then Safelite would be a better option, right?
Please advise. Thanks so much.

Have you reported it to your insurance company. Since this is a 2022 they will likely go for OEM. There are 3 variables to consider: size, location and movement. This is a clean crack and location does not interfere with the driver visibility for now however the crack will likely go all across the windshield in a short order. The integrity of the outer layer is compromised however the inside glass is still intact. As for myself I would not keep it for the long run but would not be concerned to drive it for a month or two like that if necessary. In most jurisdictions vehicle will not pass safety inspection with a crack winsheild so this by itself should answer you question.

One option is to take it to a shop that repairs cracks/chips before it grows much more. They do wonders and advertise they can fix cracks up to ~10 inches. Unless the crack is in “your” line of sight, I believe.. in Alberta you do not need to get it replaced. Certainly one sees many cars with cracked windshields driving around. There is very little danger of the windshield failing, it is laminated and can survive a lot of cracking.
Because you have a HUD system you may be over the proverbial barrel and stuck wth expensive. Certainly have it in writing that HUD will still work if you go non OEM
Good luck
My Tuscon, and Santa fe have had a chip turn into a full size crack from left to right.
OEM was close to $900.00 for each.
I had both replaced by aftermarket costing $380.00+tax CAD., including calibration.
This was also done in the dealerships bay by a third party, so they were aware when vehicle is returned after lease, and no hassle from Hyundai.

I had a non-OEM glass put in (Insurance company's desire) and the HUD was fuzzy so they had to pay and replace that with OEM. After that it was good as new. My agent had to fight for it.
I had to have mine replaced by Safelite back in March when a rock hit my windshield. I've got the Pilkington Laminated Hud Windshield, paid for by my Insurance. I only paid for the new windshield wipers. Honestly, I see no difference between it and the OEM that I've had. HUD is clear, no new or additional wind noise, no complaints. They told me I could get OEM but it would take some back and forth with my insurance, and I honestly didn't care as I only plan on keeping my 2022 for another year if that much. Spouse is taking it over at that point, but zero complaints from me.
I had it done at Safelite and HUD works fine. They used Fuyao who also makes OEM for Hyundai and others.

OEM doesn't mean Hyundai windshield. They don't make glass. For all we know OEM could be the cheapest money saving contract for them.
