In the photo there's a nick in the paint...it's likely a pebble flew up and hit it there, causing a crack, which likely propagated. You can try the dealer but they'll likely tell you it's road damage...though they may fix it for you as it's a cheap part.

If you want to DIY you can pop off the mirror and it should be pretty straight forward, you can ebay the part or buy it from the dealer.
