I purchased my Palisade Limited Trim with a black interior in August 2020. Instead of having a new car smell, the interior has an unpleasant odour, the source of which I cannot determine. I have checked for leaks, mould, etc., to no avail. I had initially attributed the odour to the fact that the car had only recently arrived in the country and had been wrapped in a protective covering during transport. However, it has now been months, and the odour persists. Due to the weather and driving conditions since purchasing the Palisade, I have not had opportunities to give it a good airing out.
Has anyone else experienced this unpleasant odour issue?

Tom, I was thinking that I had purchased the oddball vehicle that did not have the new car smell. My sense of smell is enhanced. Scents that might not be discernible by others are very noticeable to me. Perhaps my description of the odor being unpleasant is a bit of overkill; however, it is not the smell of a new car and is very overwhelming to my senses. Thanks for verifying my issue.

"new car smell" is really just the VOCs running away from the adhesives used on interior components. As companies move towards more and more "green" adhesives, I think we'll start to see the classic new car smell be a thing of the past.

I too have smelled an unpleasant odor in my Palisade Limited with Black interior. We have only had it for about a month and I will occasionally smell a pungent ammonia like smell, is the best way to describe it. I wouldn't say it's bad but it's not good either :) I have just chalked it up to it being new and all the plastic and leather off gassing a little bit. I only usually smell it when I first get in the car and then the smell goes away shortly there after and it's not every time I get in it either.

Good information. Similar story with an ammonia smell....not present every time, not as strong an odor as the car is driven for a period of time, etc. I will attribute it to an earlier reply that it is probably due to the materials.

I experienced the same smell when mine was new not really bad but not that new car smell that I had expected. It went away after a couple months I use a leather cleaner and conditioner and now it smells like I expected, other comments make sense about less adhesives being used. For the record I have the light beige interior.

if you smell an unpleasant smell its not just you and it isnt anything you have in the car. I bought a Limited Palisade with black interior in October 19. To put it in the words of the Hyundai technician “it smells like old worn socks”. The smell takes your breath away when you first open the door and i have a poor sense of smell. I met a woman with a Limited Palisade with light interior and when I mentioned this her eyes got big and threw her hands up in the air. She told me she purchased the first one the lot sold in July 2019 and had been thinking it was something she had in the car all along. She had been trying for 8 months at this point to get the smell out, but could not.
My wife opened a ticket with Hyundai’s corporate office after taking it to the dealership twice where they order bombed it and vacuumed it to no avail. The techs told my wife they could smell what she was talking about. When corporate(Coyle) called me to tell me they were closing the ticket because (Sam) the service director said it smelled like new car smell i had them hold open the ticket. I called Sam and told him i would see him tomorrow so he could fix his error after we determine he never smelled my wife’s car. Sam opened the door in front of me and pulled back out and acknowledged that was definitely NOT a new car smell. We went back in and I had Sam call Coyle to confirm this, but of course Coyle didnt pick up. Sam and I both left voicemails, Coyle didnt call me back. Sam said he was contacting his director who would advise what they would do about this and would call me back. Sam didnt call me back either. I got home from work today and my wife tells me corporate called her and told her they were not going to do anything to fix the old sock smell in our $50,000 Hyundai and that she could take it up with the BBB. I heard Hyundai didnt have great service before, but seriously?

If your paid 50k for a Palisade that smells you need to raise the issue because this is a big deal. While dealing with Sam I smelled 2 other Limited Palisades on the lot with this same terrible smell, but came across one freshly dropped(film still on it) right next to a stinky one and no smell. Hyundai has likely fixed the issue and is trying to sweep it under the rug now to save costs.

Not sure what to say, we have a Limited with beige interiors and everyone was remarking the great "new car" smell it has. The glue VOC theory has some credence and that seems to be the trend on everything nowadays but ours smell really nice.

Update: The unpleasant odor has finally gone away. The weather here in Virginia has been unseasonably warm throughout the winter months and I was able to drive with the windows down for a few days. A week later I noticed that the odor was no longer present. It is now two weeks later, and although I am no longer driving with the windows down, the odor has not returned.

That isnt working for anyone else. The only other person I know with a Limited Palisade lives in Texas as I do. We drive with the windows down half the winter. She bought hers in July, I bought mine in October, next week will be April. The smell continues to be strong as ever and most definitely NOT going away. Like i said, even after the dealership odor bombed it and used some sort of ionizer machine on it. Neither worked. Why would they do this if there wasn't an issue?

That’s great, but it isnt helping all the people here who do have a problem. I’ve owned several new cars in my life, never had an issue, and never had to resort to making online posts about an issue. I told you in my post when I was last at the dealership there were 2 Limiteds one with black interior, one with light interior and both smelled. There was a third which had just arrived, film still on paint and interior covered in plastic. This smelled fine. Hyundai has likely fixed the issue, but what about everyone who spent 50k on a car last year and early this year? Pretending like there isnt an issue isnt going to make the smell go away, nor will it I.

Well did your dealer look for any engine or transmission leaks dripping on hot exhaust system will give you a arid smell and how many miles do you have on your vehicle as it could be solvents etc being burned off from engine and exhaust from assembly !!

Maybe you got some kind of rodent that got into your vehicle and the member with the vinegar smell with the a/c is a totally different problem it has to do with moisture in the a/c condenser do a search and to make a statement its only Limited models is absurd. I recall an instance we had to ground an airplane for a foul order and we found a dead cat in the a/c duct and possibly some sort of a mouse could have entered thru the intake of the ventilation system .
