First off this car has been nothing but problems 🤦‍♀️ Rear hatch issue, child door lock issue, radiator leak… you get the picture. Now the steering wheel issue. If I pull to a curb and then pull away when turning the steering wheel left I was get an extremely loud thud and the steering wheel will bounce back a little. It’s doesn’t happen all the time but often enough that it’s concerning and not often enough that the dealer can recreate it and I haven’t been able to catch it in video… any ideas?

Is it because you are so close to the curb that when you hard turn left the back of the tire engages the curb?.. The thud/jerk is the tire pulling away from a hard contact with the curb... maybe??

I have had this happen half a dozen times over two years. It has only happened when I’ve been stopped and take my foot off the brake. It is startling

My palisade is currently being put through the wringer at the dealership about this. You can recreate it as I had to with the mechanic in the car. Basically drive the mechanic down the road a couple of miles and find the nearest parking lot and come to a complete stop. Turn your wheel all the way to the right or left until it cannot turn anymore. Take your foot off the break and once the car realizes that the brake is released, the steering wheel will then ‘bang’ or jolt out of position and you will be able to recreate that for them to see. They will not accept a video per some policy with Hyundai corporate. But do that with the mechanic in the car several times, drive for a minute or so then recreate it and they will see something is a miss with the car.
The dealer has called me and said they’ve only been able to recreate this issue with ONLY a 2021 model year and not on the 2020, 2022, or 2023 models. They’ve already replaced the battery and still have not solved the issue with the steering wheel bang. I told them I don’t want the car back until it’s resolved completely for safety concerns and they have since provided me a loaner. Please please take your car back to them and do this. My car is at the Escondido Hyundai dealership in Escondido, CA and they’re running it through all the tests and so far this is the first time Hyundai corporate has heard of this issue and this may result in a recall, but if there are more cars out there doing this like yours, please have them see this!

As far as I can see, this is not a safety issue. The first time that happened to me, in a Lowes parking lot, I stopped the car to check for damage thinking I may have been hit in the right front as I shopped. With no body damage I checked the security of the inner fender panel, it was in position and properly secured as well so I drove home. At home I jacked up the right front to check the suspension. The ball joint and tie rod assemblies were tight and secured properly. It has happened a few times since in the specific circumstances under discussion.

My speculation is that this is a manifestation of the outer CV joint design and manufacture. It appears that the rotating balls hang up and release in this turn and add power scenario. All cars have idiosyncrasies this is one on the Palisade, not a defect, just a glitch. There is no straight line vibration or catching/clicking in normal driving. If that happens, it is time for replacement. Replacing the CV joint just for the sake of replacement with the same part would be a waste of time and resources.
