Snow Mode - Won't accelerate

6328 Views 50 Replies 32 Participants Last post by  Crabby_Apple
We have a 2023 Calligraphy with 3,000 miles on it. We've encountered an issue that when we accelerate in Snow mode for the first time, usually when pulling out of our housing area. As we accelerate the car, won't shift up and begins to lose acceleration. When I move the dial to another mode, it then begins to accelerate normally again. I can then switch it back to "snow" and it will work fine from that point on. The issue seems isolated to just snow mode and it does not matter if we have AWD locked on or off.

Has anyone else encountered this? We are calling the dealer to have it looked at. We are pretty bummed though to be having an issue like this on a brand new car.

We have had this happen a few times with our 23 XRT. It happened to me this morning and I am kicking myself for not recording it. We have an appointment next week so until then, I am going to drive in snow mode and see if it will do it again.

Snow mode is not meant for a lot if acceleration. Just to get you moving.
This is the 4wd button in middle, not snow mode
Tracking this thread, had it happen to me today. It is not a safety feature, it definitely is a problem. Snow mode is not operating properly

We are taking our car in next week. My husband asked the service technician if he wanted to see this thread and he said no... I am hoping to get it on video.

I've not had an opportunity to use snow mode yet (as there has not been any snow!), but from what I'm reading it sound like snow mode is to get you moving then switch to another mode (all in 4WD if you have it).
We are having the same issue on our 23 Telluride. I got a video and sent it to Kia. I can reproduce it almost every time now. They are investigating now.

For me, it is easier to start off in 2nd or even 3rd gear using the paddles in snow and feathering the throttle. Gently using engine braking to assist the brakes to slow down. No hassle with modes I am usually in "Smart" mode except for my rebelous moods when I use Sport.

Hey Chris. Would you be willing to e-mail me the video? And share how you reproduce it? Thank you! Email is [email protected]

Same thing is happening to me in snow mode. Today Making a left out of a parking lot and cars coming towards me in a snow storm and the car just stops accelerating and I’m in the middle of the road. Definitely a safety issue.
same thing with new Palisade ... has only happened in snow mode, within the first mile of taking off ... warm or cold car didn't matter. It acts like it has stalled for a short distance ..( which seems like a much longer distance when cars are approaching !! ). 99% of the time Snow Mode is fine ... with a softened gas pedal feel ...

Asked salesman to check with Service - they knew of nothing yet .!!??! I'll send him this link.

Same thing happened to us yesterday, I'm bringing it in today. We have less than 2k miles on it. Im so upset.
Please report this issue to NHTSA. Has anyone had luck with a fix or even an acknowledgement of the issue with Hyundai or their car dealer.
Same thing happened to me in Nov with 2023 Palisade with less than 100 miles at the time. On Snow Mode exiting a school lot at 15 mph the car just would not accelerate. Pumped the accelerator as far down as it would go and it would not go. After 5 pumps or so it finally accelerated without changing modes. It happened again 20 mins later as I turned right onto a major street. Same result. Thankfully there were no cars near me or it could have been an issue. I took it to dealer and they could not recreate it so nothing done. I have not used Snow Mode since and has not happened again.

have had this happen about half the time it's in Snow mode ... within about 1/2 a mile , it only lasts for 4-5 seconds .. then things are fine ... it has done it when it's 50+ degrees , on bone dry level pavement , using very gentle throttle .!!

it is Not the usual slow to react Snow mode ...!!! if it hasn't happened to you , then you just won't get it .... it feels like a clogged fuel filter , or dead spot in the throttle position sensor back in the 60/70's ..!! dead , but just for a short bit !!

Here is a video I captured of it happening. I haven’t been able to get it into Kiafor a variety or reasons, but hope to do so in the next week or two. I can recreate it almost at will now. It started happening turning right too.
Just curious why one would use snow mode anyway. I have yet to find a condition where regular "ECO" fails. To me.. it's just a placebo button. Unfortunately I can't, at the moment.. do a subjective test, like drive up a steep hill with 6 ~10 inches of fresh wet snow.. to see with which buttons I go the farthest.. or spinout the least. Anyone?

I just got a brand new 2023 calligraphy awd and this is happening to me on snow mode and comfort mode! I got the car late January and it has happened about 6 times now. It’s super scary and I’m afraid someone is going to hit me!
For the times it happened to us, it didn’t matter how much gas we tried to give it, it would not accelerate until I changed the drive mode. It was almost like being in neutral but the RPMs did not go up.
This happened to me as well. I've only own my 23 Palisade Calligraphy for less than a month and has happened 6 times now. With traffic behind me, and no matter how much gas I gave, it does feel like as if you're in N and my RPM stayed at 1,000. It is nerve wrecking with all these cars behind me and I'm stuck there and not moving. I don't know what to do. I do have to say this happened in Snow mode as it's still winter in Canada. I'm disheartened that I spent $67k CAD on this brand new vehicle and I'm experiencing this not even a month into buying this.

Umm, there is no reason to put it in "snow mode" to begin with. Your Palisade will do quite well in ECO
