Ralph, It relates to warpage due to uneven heat cycle expansion/contraction same as cylinder heads. Warpage is a well documented and experienced occurrence in the repair industry. Torque your lugs you will be happier and more handsome;

LOL...also not true. Yes, it is to make sure a gasket seals, but I have seen parts incorrectly torqued that were permanently damaged from improper torque. In my younger years, I built extremely high horsepower engines used in racing. The effect of heat cycling has devastating effects on metal parts, especially cast parts, which are not very stable to begin with.
Improper and over torquing are two separate issues. 40 years as a millwright I have torqued more than a few bolts on turbines, associated piping, pumps.. compressors etc. I have come across lots of stripped bolts due to over torquing but never distortion on metal to metal due to over tightening a series of bolts. You’re experience obviously differs.
