That's crazy. Certainly shouldn't be on the owner to pay for a software update due to poor engineering and validation.
I assume we're talking about TSB 24-TC-001H.

A TSB involves a failure of some sort and instructions for fixing it. All automakers issue scads of them. By your logic, the warranty would be lifetime. You'd not be paying $250 for the software. You'd be paying for the installation of the software. It's a lot more involved than a memory stick map update. Many indy shops don't have the capability to update control software. This applies to all automakers. $200 - $250 is pretty typical for a ECU or TCU update.

Further, the way the TSB reads, it only applies if there are "coupling noises when making turns". So, even if somebody who was still under warranty wanted to apply the TSB as a preventative measure it looks like Hyundai would want then to pay. Regardless, if this TSB applied to my vehicle still under warranty I would argue for a good will update under the theory that juddering causes undue wear so it should be nipped in the bud. Arguing doesn't mean getting, but it doesn't cost anything.
